IELTS Vocabulary for Band 9

Vocabulary is assessed under Lexical Resource in Writing and Speaking. The goal isn't “big words” — it's effective, natural, accurate vocabulary used in the right context.

What IELTS actually rewards

  • Range — different words and expressions
  • Accuracy — the correct word for the meaning
  • Collocation — words that combine naturally
  • Paraphrasing — the same idea, expressed differently
  • Word formation — noun / verb / adjective / adverb forms
  • Appropriacy — formal vs informal register

The core principles

1 Don't just learn “big words”

A difficult word does not equal a high band.

Governments should ameliorate the deleterious ramifications of vehicular proliferation.

Governments should reduce the negative effects of increasing car ownership.

The second is clearer and more natural. IELTS rewards effective vocabulary, not impressive-sounding vocabulary.

2 Learn vocabulary in groups

Instead of “important = significant”, learn the whole word family:

importantsignificant considerablecrucial essentialvital influential
Education plays a crucial role in economic development. · There has been a considerable increase in online learning.

3 Learn collocations

A collocation is a combination of words that naturally occur together — one of the most important parts of IELTS vocabulary.

Education

higher education · academic performance · access to education · vocational training
high education · education achievement

Environment

environmental damage · carbon emissions · renewable energy · natural resources

Technology

technological advancement · digital literacy · online platforms · access to technology

4 Learn paraphrasing

IELTS often needs the same idea in different words.

Many people prefer to work from home. →
Many people choose to work remotely. · An increasing number of employees work from home. · Remote working has become increasingly popular.

But don't change words mechanically — “children → offspring” is technically related but unnatural. Use young people / youngsters / children depending on context.

5 Word formation

FormWord
Verbdevelop
Noundevelopment
Adjectivedeveloped / developing
Developing countries need sustainable development. · Technology can be beneficial to students. · Environmental protection is essential.

6 Expressing opinions

Instead of repeating “I think…”, use:

I believe that…I would argue that… In my view,…From my perspective,… It seems to me that…I strongly believe that…
I would argue that governments should prioritise investment in public transportation.
